NaNoWriMo, take two

Sep. 6th, 2010 | 12:10 am

This year, I will do it. It is now September, and I'm already working on background information and research.

It's not going to be a particularly exciting story, but it will be mine. I wanted to do exciting last year, and I only got 20k words into the required 50k.

In any case, on the off chance anyone will ever read this, I will be posting characters and scenes and backstory on here.

Um, cheers.

Hey, look, Cabled Mittens! And they're crochet!

Nov. 24th, 2009 | 10:11 am
location: School
mood: hungryhungry
music: The song from On the Town where they're in the museum.

Okay, so this (free patterns) will maybe be a rare thing once I figure out etsy, but here's one now!

I was looking for some nice cabled mittens for a cabled set that I could make for a girlfriend for the holidays, but I couldn't find any nice crocheted ones that I liked/would have fit her or the set correctly. So, I made these.

Yarn: I used Simply Soft, which is a worsted. It's a bit thin for a worsted weight yarn, but I'm sure any would work.

Hook: F 3.75mm
Other: Yarn needle, maybe a stitch marker.

Body:
Make a magic ring (go here if you need help)
Row 1: DC 8 in magic ring, join with a ss (8 DC)
Row 2: 2 FPDC in first DC, 2 DC in the rest of DCs across (16 st)
Row 3: 2 FPDC in next two FPDC, *DC in next DC, 2 DC in next DC* across (25 st)
Row 4: Cable over next four FPDC (FPTR in 3rd FPDC from hook, FPTR in 4th FPDC from hook, FPTR in 1st skipped FPDC, FPTR in 2nd skipped FPDC), DC in each of next DC (25 st)
Row 5: FPDC in next four FPTR, DC in each DC across (25 st)
Row 6: FPDC in next four FPDC, DC in each DC across (25 st)
Rows 7-9: rep rows 4-6
Row 10: rep row 4
Row 11: FPDC in next four FPTR, DC in next 5, ch 5, sk 5 DCs, DC in each of next DC (20 st, 5 ch)
Row 12: FpDC in next four FPDC, DC in next 5 DC, DC in next five ch, DC in each of next DC (25 st)
Rows 13-15: rep rows 4-6
Row 16: rep row 4
Rows 17-19: *FPDC, BPDC* across. Fasten off.

The last rows make a ribbing.

Thumb:
Row 1: connect yarn on the top edge of thumb hole, DC in each DC to the edge, DC4tog across side, dc in bottom 5 st, dc4tog across side, dc in last dcs (10 dcs)
Rows 2-4: dc in each across (10 dc)
Row 5: dc2tog across (5 dc)
Fasten off.

Finishing:
Cinch the hole in the top of the thumb and knot it. Weave in and cut loose ends.
Weave in any other loose ends on the mitten.

Yay! Do tell me if you've used this pattern, and tell me if there are any errors.

NOTE: Don't sell this. I'll find out if you did, and I will be angry. I'm pretty insane about copyright, so just don't mess with it, okay? I don't want to have to take this down before I want to, and I'm happy if you use this pattern for gifts and things and I'm more than happy if you refer people to it, but don't say it's yours and don't make any money off of it. That is all.

Well, I've finally gotten to 1/25 of the way done. That's 4%. I think I'm doing pretty darn well, considering I really only started this weekend.

Here are some more stats!

And now to write some more. Class in an hour.

Well, it's now well into November... (the 10th, to be exact.)

Nov. 10th, 2009 | 09:48 am
location: School, downstairs by the nice bathrooms
mood: accomplished

I've been at school for, oh, an hour. My progress today:

However, I do have over a thousand words!

I have 20 days to get to 50000.

Yes, I am procrastinating. I have class in a half hour (Copyright and Music Publishing.) And I have to meet with my adviser in three hours to figure out what courses I still need to take and how the hell to change my degree type without having to fill out too many forms. During class, I'll likely be writing. Because I'm a good student, honest. (I have a 3.2+ GPA, so who cares?) And I'll have another, oh three free hours being stuck at school. I'll need to do my theory homework eventually, and I'm not sure if writing is avoiding homework or if doing homework is avoiding writing.

In any case, I think I'm doing pretty well, on both counts. And now I'll Stop avoiding both.

I can guarantee I wouldn't use this under normal circumstances

Nov. 7th, 2009 | 10:25 am
location: Not at a computer

BUT: I'm doing NaNoWriMo, and I'll need a place to put stuff when I'm in class and on my iPod touch.

So that's basically the purpose of this for the time being.

Also, I have no reason to think that I'll actually have 50000 words by the end of the month. I'll likely have 5000. But, I'll try to finish my novel at some point.
